High purity aluminas

Sasol's aluminas have high chemical purity and dispersibility. All important physical properties such as pore volume, particle size and specific surface area can be adjusted.

The production facilities are in Brunsbüttel (Germany), and Lake Charles (Louisiana, USA).

PURAL / CATAPAL

PURAL^® and CATAPAL^® are the respective tradenames for the high purity boehmite and bayerite aluminas manufactured in Brunsbüttel, Germany and Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA. PURAL^® and CATAPAL^® are available as white, free flowing powders whose unique combination of purity, consistency and controllable physical properties make them excellent starting materials for many products. This family of aluminas (alpha-alumina monohydrates) has historically been used as supports or binders for catalysts in refinery and chemical processes. Recent developments in many other applications have indicated these aluminas have applications in areas far beyond catalysis.

PURALOX / CATALOX

PURALOX^® and CATALOX^® are the trademarks for the aluminium oxides derived from the controlled activation of PURAL^® and CATAPAL^® high purity aluminas. The proprietary processes used in the preparation of these high purity aluminium oxides allows us to control many important physical properties and hence 'tailor-made' a product for your process. Both PURALOX^® and CATALOX^® are available as white, free flowing powders with high purity and consistency. Due to the tightly controlled processing conditions during and after manufacturing these aluminium oxides, PURALOX^® and CATALOX^® make excellent starting materials for the catalyst industry. Providing excellent specific catalytic activities, high surface area stability and low attrition loss. PURALOX^® and CATALOX^® are arguably the best starting materials for the catalyst industry where consistency and an unobtrusive nature of the support is highly desired. Due to their high thermal stability, PURALOX^® and CATALOX^® are widely used raw materials for washcoat formulations in pollution control catalysts. Recent developments have found other suitable uses for these materials in applications outside catalysis such as polishing and chromatography.

Coarse alumina powders

The nature and quality of the carrier material is a key function of the catalysts performance. Chemical composition and physical properties, such as surface area, pore volume, pore radius, crystal phase and morphology are crucial for a successful development. In particular, slurry and fluid bed catalysts demand highly sophisticated carrier materials with regard to particle size distribution, particle morphology and attrition. These characteristics are of great importance for fluid and slurry bed reactions.

Sasol offers unique tailor-made high purity coarse alumina, based on sol-gel technology in combination with drying, classifying and calcination. Production parameters and subsequent processing steps allow tight control over physical properties such as crystallite size, crystal phase, porosity, particle size distribution and attrition resistance.
